Halal cosmetics sourcing: what to ask a Chinese factory
Alcohol-free and pork-free are formulation questions. Halal certification is a plant and supply-chain question. They are not the same thing.
Buyers in the Gulf and Southeast Asia often ask for “halal cosmetics” and receive a formula statement instead of a certificate. Both matter, but they answer different questions.
Formulation: what goes in
Ask for a full ingredient breakdown with the origin of each animal-derived material. Gelatin, collagen, keratin, carmine and some emulsifiers are the usual watch-list. Alcohol content should be declared as a percentage, not just “alcohol-free”.
Certification: who audits the plant
A halal certificate covers the production site, cleaning procedures, storage segregation and the supply chain of raw materials. It is issued by a recognised certification body after an audit, and it is product- and plant-specific.
Practical questions for the factory
- Which raw materials are animal-derived, and what is their source?
- Is there a dedicated line or a validated cleaning procedure between products?
- Can you declare alcohol content by percentage?
- Do you hold a halal certificate, and which body issued it?
- Will you support our certification body’s audit with documents?
